Origin & Appearance
The Chamaedorea elegans, also known as the mountain palm, comes from the dense rainforests of Mexico and Guatemala. There it grows as the undergrowth of larger trees and has adapted to shady conditions. The mountain palm belongs to the Arecaceae family (palm family) and is one of the most popular indoor palms in the world.
Typical of the Chamaedorea elegans are its delicate, pinnate leaves that grow on slender, upright stems. The fine, deep green fronds give it an airy, elegant look. It grows slowly and usually reaches a height of 80 to 120 cm indoors. In ideal conditions, it can produce small, yellowish flowers that appear in dense panicles - but only on older specimens.
care instructions
▪ Light: Tolerates semi-shaded to shady locations very well. Direct sunlight should be avoided as it can burn the sensitive leaves.
▪ Water: Water moderately – the soil should dry slightly between waterings, but never completely. Avoid waterlogging!
▪ Temperature: Ideal temperatures are between 18 and 24 °C. The plant is not frost tolerant and should not be kept below 12 °C.
▪ Humidity: Can cope with normal room air, but benefits from occasional spraying with lime-free water.
▪ Fertilization: From spring to autumn, apply a mild liquid fertilizer for green plants every 4 to 6 weeks.
