Origin & Appearance
The Sansevieria zeylanica, also known as bow hemp, originally comes from the dry savannahs and desert regions of Sri Lanka and India. It belongs to the asparagus family (Asparagaceae) and is closely related to the well-known Sansevieria trifasciata.
This plant is characterized by its upright, sword-shaped leaves, which have a dark green base color with irregular, silvery-green horizontal stripes. The leathery, strong leaves can reach a height of up to 100 cm and grow directly from the base of the plant, without stems or branches. In rare cases, the snake plant forms small, cream-colored flower panicles that have a pleasant scent, but only appear under optimal conditions.
care instructions
▪ Light: Tolerates partially shaded to sunny locations. Can also cope with little light, but then grows more slowly.
▪ Water: Very undemanding – the soil should dry out well between waterings. Avoid waterlogging at all costs! Water only rarely in winter.
▪ Temperature: Ideal temperatures are between 18 and 30 °C. Very sensitive to cold – avoid temperatures below 10 °C.
▪ Humidity: Copes easily with dry room air, no additional spraying necessary.
▪ Fertilization: During the growth period from spring to autumn, provide cactus fertilizer or a low dose of green plant fertilizer every 4 to 6 weeks.
